- Introduction to High-Voltage Ring Main Units (HV RMUs)

A high-voltage ring main unit (HV RMU) is a type of electrical equipment consisting of a set of high-voltage switchgear installed in a steel plate metal cabinet or configured as an assembled compartmentalized ring network power supply unit. Its core components are load switches and fuses. With the renovation of urban power supply and distribution systems, HV RMU equipment has been increasingly widely used in engineering practice due to its characteristics such as miniaturization, oil-free design, fast operation speed, low failure rate, minimal maintenance requirements, and cost-effectiveness.
In the cabinet, air-insulated load switches mainly include gas-generating type, compressed air type, and vacuum type. Load switches with SF₆ insulation are SF₆-type; since SF₆ gas is sealed in the shell, the isolation break formed by it is invisible.
Load switches in HV RMUs generally require three positions: load breaking, circuit isolation, and reliable grounding. Gas-generating, compressed air, and SF₆-type load switches can easily achieve these three positions. However, vacuum interrupters can only perform switching operations and cannot provide isolation. Therefore, vacuum load ring main switchgears are generally equipped with an additional isolating switch in front of the load switch to form an isolation break.
HV RMUs are generally classified into two types: air-insulated and SF₆-insulated. They are suitable for three-phase AC power distribution systems with a rated voltage of 10kV, a maximum operating voltage of 12kV, and a rated frequency of 50Hz. They are used to switch load current, interrupt short-circuit current, and can also interrupt transformer no-load current and charging current of overhead lines and cable lines within a certain distance. Serving as key switchgear for ring network power supply and terminal power supply, they play a role in control and protection.
